1.    Do I have to take part?

No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. Even after you have signed the consent form, you are free to withdraw from the study at any time without giving any reason and without any negative consequences.

2.    What is inulin?

Inulin is a type of dietary fibre naturally occurring in certain plants, such as chicory root. It has gained attention for its prebiotic properties, meaning it serves as a food source for beneficial bacteria in the gut, promoting their growth and activity. As a dietary supplement, inulin is often extracted from plants and added to various food products. It's known for its ability to improve digestive health by supporting the growth of probiotics (good bacteria) in the intestines.

3.    What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?

We believe there are minimal disadvantages (if any) in taking part in this research. If anything, it will give you an opportunity to learn about your body via free body composition measurements with blood measurement data. In terms of risks, this is minimal. There may be a small risk of bruising at the site where the blood sample is taken and fatigue from the exercise. The research team will always be contactable, so participants will be able to notify the team immediately if any adverse symptoms arise during or after the research.

4.    Are there any benefits to taking part?

The study is being undertaken to explore potential differences in the gut microbiome and other health markers In individuals from South Asian and Caucasian backgrounds. This study will help in identifying potential differences and effects of inulin and Western diets on health markers, which could help in improving dietary and clinical guidelines in disease risk and management. 

5.    Will my data be kept confidential?

All information collected about you during this study will be kept strictly confidential and will only be seen by the research team. Your data will be identified by ID numbers. Outputs will not contain names and addresses so that those who take part in the study cannot be identified from any collected data, written report of the research, or any publications arising from it.   Identifying materials such as consent forms and completed questionnaires will be held separately in locked cabinets inside University premises, in agreement with the Data Protection Act 1998 and data protection rules employed by the University of Westminster.
